The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 and you are a lodger in this country. 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
