Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-A’in-Sad. (* Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah and to whomever He reveals know their precise meanings.) 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 He submitted, “O my Lord – my bones have become weak and old age shines forth from my head, and O my Lord, I have never been disappointed in my prayer to you.” 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable! 6 O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal. 7 [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" 8 He (the angel) said, “So it is; your Lord says, ‘This is easy for Me – in fact I created you before this, at a time when you did not exist.’” 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Then he came out from the Sanctuary to his nation, and gestured to them to exalt (their Lord) at the dawn and at the evening. 11 To John We said, "Hold fast the Book," and while he was still a child, We bestowed upon him wisdom, 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 and cherishing his parents, not arrogant, rebellious. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
