Certainly Aaron had said to them even before (the return of Moses): "My people, you were fallen into error because of the calf. Surely your Lord is Most Compassionate; so follow me and obey my command." 90 [But] they answered: "By no means shall we cease to worship it until Moses comes back to us!" 91 (Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong, 92 "That you followed me not (according to my advice to you)? Have you then disobeyed my order?" 93 Answered [Aaron]: "O my mother's son! Seize me not by my beard, nor by my head! Behold, I was afraid lest [on thy return] thou say, 'Thou hast caused a split among the children of Israel, and hast paid no heed to my bidding!" 94 He said: What was then your object, O Samiri? 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 He said: Begone then, surely for you it will be in this life to say, Touch (me) not; and surely there is a threat for you, which shall not be made to fail to you, and look at your god to whose worship you kept (so long); we will certainly burn it, then we will certainly scatter it a (wide) scattering in the sea. 97 Your God is only the One God; there is no god, but He alone who in His knowledge embraces everything.' 98 Thus do We relate to you (some) of the news of what has gone before; and indeed We have given to you a Reminder from Ourselves. 99 If any do turn away therefrom, verily they will bear a burden on the Day of judgment; 100 which they shall bear forever. It will be a grievous burden for them on the Day of Judgement, 101 the Day when the Trumpet shall be sounded and We shall muster the sinners, their eyes turned blue with terror. 102 In whispers will they speak to each other (saying): "You stayed not longer than ten (days)." 103 We know well what they will utter, whereas the wisest among them will say, “You have stayed just for a day.” 104
