Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Lord, remove this torment from us for we are believers". 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth shed tears for them; nor were they respited, 29
