Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
