A multitude from the ancients. 39 and many from the later generations. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
