The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and all those on earth. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
