The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 tearing away his skin! 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
