The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 Eager to roast; 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
