Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 therein every wise bidding 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Yet they are lost in doubt and play. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
