The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it sets: 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 and taught to him 5 and endowed with wisdom; who in time manifested himself; 6 being on the higher horizon, 7 then came down close 8 So he was the measure of two bows or closer still. 9 Thus He revealed unto His bondman whatsoever He revealed. 10 The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw. 11 So will you dispute with him over what he saw? 12 Indeed he saw him a second time, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Close to which is the Everlasting Paradise. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you then considered the Lat and the Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
