The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
