The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
