The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from the Ascent. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 The Lord of Strength; so he attained completion, 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he approached and descended 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 He revealed to God's servant whatever he wanted. 10 The heart was not untrue in (making him see) what he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Nigh thereto is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What, have you males, and He females? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Is the human to have whatever he fancies? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
