The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion did not err, nor did he go astray. 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 taught him by one terrible in power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon, 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And indeed, he saw him a second time 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 near which is Paradise. 15 When the lote-tree was being enveloped, by whatever around it. 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 Do sons belong to you and daughters to God? 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath sent down no authority. They follow but their fancy, and that which pleaseth their souls; whereas assuredly there hath come unto them from their Lord the guidance. 23 Can the human being have whatever he wishes? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
