A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
