a good many of olden times, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
