And they ask you about Zulqarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. 83 We established him in the land, and gave him the means to achieve all things. 84 And he followed a road 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and he found nearby a people. We said, 'O Dhool Karnain, either thou shalt chastise them, or thou shalt take towards them a way of kindness.' 86 He said, "We shall certainly punish him who does wrong; then he shall be brought back to his Lord who will punish him with a grievous punishment, 87 “And regarding one who believed and did good deeds – so his reward is goodness; and we shall soon give him an easy command.” 88 He travelled again 89 Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun. 90 Thus it was. And surely We have encompassed all that was with him in knowledge 91 And once again he chose the right means [to achieve a right end]. 92 Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech. 93 They said: 'O Dhu'l-Qarnain, Gog and Magog are oppressing the land. May we pay you some tribute so that you could build a rampart between us and them?" 94 He said: That wherein my Lord hath established me is better (than your tribute). Do but help me with strength (of men), I will set between you and them a bank. 95 Bring me ingots of iron." Then after he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, he said: "(Light a fire) and ply bellows." When he had made it (red like) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour on it." 96 And thus [the rampart was built, and] their enemies were unable to scale it, and neither were they able to pierce it. 97 He said: This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord cometh to pass, He will lay it low, for the promise of my Lord is true. 98 ۞ On that day We shall leave them to surge like waves on one another: the trumpet will be blown, and We shall collect them all together. 99 And We shall set hell on that Day unto the infidels with a setting. 100 (To) Those whose eyes had been under a covering from My Reminder (this Quran), and who could not bear to hear (it). 101
