Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
