A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
