The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their privates 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
