In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 (Worship Him) for more or less than half of the night 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and most potent and good for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (understanding) the Word (of Allah). 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 Remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave it to Me to deal with the deniers, who live a life of comfort, and bear with them a little longer. 11 Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On a day when the earth and the mountains will tremble, and the mountains turn into dunes of flowing sand. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment. 16 If therefore you disbelieve, how will you guard yourselves against a day that shall make the children grey-headed? 17 Whereon the heaven will be cleft asunder? His Promise is certainly to be accomplished. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
