The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and believes in the finest, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
