The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one. 15 who belied and turned away, 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 not as payment for favours received, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise). 21
