The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 Createth man from a clot. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Teacheth man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 or enjoins true piety? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 Then let him summon his council, 17 We will call the angels of Hell. 18 Nay! (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah! ۩ 19
