The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 to an orphaned relative 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
