The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
