Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We had certainly tested the people of the Pharaoh before them to whom a noble Messengers had come, saying, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
