A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Behold! the water which ye drink: 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
