The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Rise up and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
