The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction. 21
