The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read! In the name of your Lord, who created: 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 Who hath taught mankind by the pen 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 And yet, but yet man is rebellious, 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Does he not know that Allah sees everything? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So, let him call upon his way! 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
