I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And by oath of the night when it turns back. 33 and the morning when it appears, 34 Surely, it is one of the gravest things, 35 as a warner to mortals. 36 whether one steps forward to embrace the faith or one turns away from it. 37 Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 except the Companions of the Right. 39 In Gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another, 40 Of evil-doers: 41 "What led you into Hell Fire?" 42 They will reply, "We did not pray, 43 And did not feed the needy, 44 and we plunged along with the plungers, 45 and we denied the Day of Judgement 46 "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." 47 And so, of no benefit to them could be the intercession of any that would intercede for them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 As though they were frightened asses 50 Fleeing from a lion! 51 Rather each one of them desires that he should be given open Books. 52 Nay, but they do not [believe in and hence, do not] fear the life to come. 53 No, indeed, surely, this is a Reminder. 54 Let him who will take heed: 55 But they will not remember except as God wills: He is worthy to be feared, and He is worthy of forgiving 56
