Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!- 18 and you devour the inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
