The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its midmorning, 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 By the earth and Him Who spread it forth, 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 However, they rejected him and slew her. So their Lord completely destroyed them and their city for their sins. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
