He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And he fears, 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoever wills may remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 Olives and dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
