The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard, 109 "His plan is to get you out of your land: then what is it ye counsel?" 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed." 112 And the sorcerers came unto Pharaoh [and] said: "Verily, we ought to have a great reward if it is we who prevail." 113 "Yes," said he, "you will be among the honoured." 114 So they said: "O Moses, you may cast your spell first, or we shall cast ours." 115 He said: cast ye. Then when they cast down, they enchanted the eyes of the people, and terrified them and brought mighty magic to bear. 116 We put it into Moses's mind by inspiration: "Throw (now) thy rod": and behold! it swallows up straight away all the falsehoods which they fake! 117 ۞ So the truth was established, and what they did became null. 118 And thus were they vanquished there and then, and became utterly humiliated. 119 And the wizards fell down prostrate, 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 "The Lord of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron)." 122 Pharaoh said: 'Do you believe in Him before I permit? This is a plot that you have contrived in the city in order to expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 I will cut off your hands and feet on the alternate sides and crucify you all." 124 They replied: 'We shall surely turn to our Lord. 125 And what is it for which thou takest vengeance on us save that we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came unto us? Our Lord! pour out upon us perseverance and cause us to die as Muslims. 126
