The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
