Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the day when We will seize (them) with the most violent seizing; surely We will inflict retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
