A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
