a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times. 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
