Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
