The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth exists a recognised right, 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
