And We sent to no city a prophet [who was denied] except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship that they might humble themselves [to Allah]. 94 Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease." So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive. 95 And if the people of the townships had believed and kept from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth. But (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, and so We seized them on account of what they used to earn. 96 What! do the people of the towns then feel secure from Our punishment coming to them by night while they sleep? 97 Or are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them in the daytime while they play? 98 Are they then secure from Allah's scheme? None deemeth himself secure from Allah's scheme save folk that perish. 99
