Said the chieftains of Firaun’s people, “He is really an expert magician.” 109 “He wishes to expel you all from your kingdom; so what do you advise?” 110 They said: "Put him and his brother off (awhile) and send out heralds to the cities 111 That they may bring to you every enchanter possessed of knowledge. 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and asked, "Shall we have a reward, if we should prevail?" 113 He said: yea! and verily ye shall be of those brought nigh. 114 They said, "Moses, will you first throw, or shall we?" 115 He said: Throw! And when they threw they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and overawed them, and produced a mighty spell. 116 We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the magicians were obliged to fall prostrate. 120 Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 But Pharaoh said: "You have come to accept belief in Him without my permission! This surely is a plot you have hatched to expel the people from the land. You will soon come to know. 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They said, 'Surely unto our Lord we are turning. 125 "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)! 126
