They will question thee concerning Dhool Karnain. Say: 'I will recite to you a mention of him. 83 Indeed We established him upon the earth, and We gave him to everything a way. 84 He therefore pursued a purpose. 85 Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water. And he found near it a people. We (Allah) said (by inspiration): "O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness." 86 He said, "We shall certainly punish him who does wrong; then he shall be brought back to his Lord who will punish him with a grievous punishment, 87 "But as for him who believes (in Allah's Oneness) and works righteousness, he shall have the best reward, (Paradise), and we (Dhul-Qarnain) shall speak unto him mild words (as instructions)." 88 Then he followed another way, 89 until he reached the rising of the sun, he found it rising upon a nation for whom We provided no veil against it to shade them. 90 Even so! and We had a full knowledge of what he had. 91 Then he followed a way 92 Till he reached a place between two mountains, and found this side of it a people who understood but little of what was spoken. 93 They said: O Zulqarnain! surely Gog and Magog make mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute on condition that you should raise a barrier between us and them 94 He said: "(The power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than tribute): Help me therefore with strength (and labour): I will erect a strong barrier between you and them: 95 Bring me blocks of iron to fill up the passage between the two mountains." He told them to ply their bellows until the iron became hot as fire. Then he told them to pour on it molten brass." 96 Such was the rampart that Gog and Magog could not scale, nor could they pierce it. 97 Dhu al-Qarnayn said: "This is a mercy from my Lord: but when the time of my Lord's promise shall come, He will level the rampart with the ground. My Lord's promise always comes true." 98 ۞ We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other, and the trumpet blast will be sounded, when We shall gather them all together. 99 Then We shall bring Hell right before the infidels 100 Whose eyes were veiled against My warning, and they could not hear. 101
