Tell them the story of Abraham, 69 When he said to his father and his people: "What do you worship?" 70 They said, "We worship idols, and we keep squatting in seclusion before them." 71 He asked, "Do they hear you when you call to them? 72 Or do they benefit you, or do you harm?" 73 They said: Nay, but we found our fathers acting on this wise. 74 He said: Have you then considered what you have been worshipping: 75 you, and your elderly fathers? 76 "Now [as for me, I know that,] verily, these [false deities] are my enemies, [and that none is my helper] save the Sustainer of all the worlds, 77 He created me and He will guide me. 78 It is He who gives me food and drink 79 And when I sicken, then He healeth me. 80 and who will cause me to die and then will bring me back to life 81 "And Who, I hope will forgive me my faults on the Day of Recompense, (the Day of Resurrection)," 82 "My Lord, bestow me the command and join me with those who deserve your proximity." 83 and grant me an honourable reputation among posterity, 84 "And make me among the inheritors of the Gardens of serenity." 85 "And forgive my father - for, verily, he is among those who have gone astray 86 And disgrace me not on the day when they are raised 87 the Day when wealth and sons will be of no avail, 88 except what is done in obedience to God with a submissive heart. 89 For, [on that Day,] paradise will be brought within sight of the God-conscious, 90 And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators, 91 they will be asked, "Where are those whom you worshipped 92 "Instead of Allah? Will they help you or retaliate?" 93 "Then they will be thrown headlong into the (Fire),- they and those straying in Evil, 94 And the hosts of the Shaitan, all. 95 And they, while contending therein, shall say: 96 "By Allah, we were surely in clear error 97 When we made you equal to the Lord of the worlds; 98 It was naught but the sinners that led us astray; 99 And now we have none to intercede for us, 100 nor any loving friend. 101 O that we might return again, and be among the believers!' 102 Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 103 Surely, Your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 104
