The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
