The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) 2 In a land close by; but they, (even) after (this) defeat of theirs, will soon be victorious- 3 Within three to nine years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And that day the believers will rejoice 4 at the victory granted by Allah. He grants victory to whomsoever He pleases. He is the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate. 5 (It is) the promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not. 6 They know only the outward appearance of the life of the world, and they! of the Hereafter, they are neglecetful. 7 Do they not ponder about their own selves? God has created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them for a purpose and for an appointed time? Yet many deny they will ever meet with their Lord. 8 Have they not travelled through the land to see how terrible was the end of the people who lived before them. The people who lived before them were stronger than them in might, in tilling, and in developing the earth. Our Messengers came to them with clear miracles. God did not do an injustice to them but they wronged themselves. 9 Therefore evil was the end of those who did evil, for they denied the signs of God and made fun of them. 10
