A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
