The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
